I
am traditionally trained in the fine arts and bring
a strong and passionate understanding of classic composition
to
my black and white photographs.
Photography
offers me not only a method of creative expression, but
also a
way to share my vision, through a viewfinder, of surroundings,
objects, nature and places that may otherwise never garner
a second glance or a moments reflection. In an instant,
through the lens of my camera and a fragment of exposure,
I am able to make real and visible in black and white what
some may only sense or even dismiss.
When I see something that captures my attention,
I study it. I look for all the possibilities. The angles,
the light, texture - anything to influence the emotion I
want my photograph to arouse. I like the seductive and dramatic
effects of fog and mist, or juxtaposition of nature in an
urban setting, to help sear a particular mood or sentiment
into a photograph. And I am always fascinated by the concept
that I can look through the lens of my camera, capture the
moment and share a different and perhaps unexpected perspective.
I
have chosen to remain with the conventional medium of silver-based
films and fiber-based papers because of their rich texture,
extended tonal range and archival quality, individually
darkroom printed by hand. Every photograph is a piece of
art.
I take great pleasure in searching
for new photographs, be it on my block in Baltimore City
or in exotic foreign places. During the past few years, I
have had the opportunity to photograph in China, Vietnam,
Bermuda, Nova Scotia and most recently in Venice and
Paris. In between trips, I enjoy the beautiful mid-Atlantic
seaboard for my creative inspiration.
My work has been purchased
nationally and internationally. I have numerous commercial
and private clients. My photographs
are in the collections of The Greater Baltimore Committee,
The Johns Hopkins Hospital, Northrop Grumman Corporation,
Blue
Cross/Blue
Shield,
Carey
Limousine,
and Loyola University. My work can also be found at Longaberger
Baskets, Ballard Design, Ethan Allen, and Crate & Barrel
nationwide.
In April of 2006, Decor Magazine, The
Art & Framing
Business Resource featured an article on photography. A number
of my photographs were represented in the article.
My
studio and darkroom are located in the historic
waterfront neighborhood of Canton in Baltimore City.
I am a native of Ambridge, Pennsylvania, I hold degrees
in Art Education and Elementary Education from Slippery
Rock State University. I have also studied at the Pittsburgh
Institute of Art, Maryland Institute College of Art,
International Center for Photography in New York City
and the Maine Media Workshops in Camden, Maine.
